My son and I were talking about Christianity last night in relations to the Republicans giving the rich a $70 billion dollar a year tax break and then saying that they have to cut the budget by $60 billion dollars a year. That would of course still leave a $10 billion dollar deficit.
Our conversation went on to the fact that it’s the poor, the middle class, and children that will be affected by these tax cuts. We’re wondering where all the Christians are that should be speaking out about the very unchristian things the Republicans are doing while disguising it with talk about abortion.
Problem was, I couldn’t name any good Christians that were still alive. Martin Luther King was the first one I named, but of course he was assassinated. Kind of like hanging Jesus on a cross for doing good. Maybe that’s why they all remain silent. That’s not to say there aren’t any good Christians alive today. But I think it’s because good Christians show more by their deeds than their talk that they are good Christians. Democrats watch out for the little guy, the poor, the disenfranchised, workers, children, and the common man. But they don’t do it in the name of Christianity. They just do it. My son and I do many things some might call Christian acts, but we don’t do them in the name of Christianity. We just do them because it’s the right thing to do.
The problem we both have is that Christians should be screaming at the Republicans for the unchristian things they are doing. Jesus said he came to bring good news to the poor, not to the rich. But I guess the so called Christian Republicans don’t read the Bible much.
I’m looking forward to a time in the near future when President Obama or some person in power points out the unchristian acts of the Republicans so they can finally get some of the Christian right on their side because they want to do as Jesus commanded, which is to love thy neighbor.
Stephen Pasquini says
What is a “good Christian”?
Dad says
A good Christian is a person who actually does as Jesus asks, not by words, but by deeds. Some will disagree with this because they love to adhere to the idea that faith in Jesus is enough to make them a Christian.
Jesus said that at the end we will be judged on the following, none of which has anything to do with taking care of the rich and powerful over the poor and weak. The part I quote below is for those who did not do as Jesus asked. The Christians are those that do as Jesus asked.
Jesus said to those who ignored the poor and weak, ‘You… are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they…will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least…, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Mathew 25:41-46
